FASCINATION OF THE AMPUTEE - WOMAN AND DEVOTEES

Fascination of the Amputee, the phrase itself gives an idea of what the condition means. It is a curious feeling of certain persons getting aroused by amputated people. This is not a recent occurrence, but in fact has been referred to as far back as the 1920’s. Magazines have published stories relating to the attraction of persons to amputees. In ancient times, this phenomenon was considered almost religious, with the amputees being the religion preachers or teachers.

This feeling is found to arise from an emotional strain in people from their young childhood age. The sexual behavioral patterns that are impressed upon the mind from a young age were studied, to give an insight into this feeling of erotic pleasure with amputees. It was concluded then that these feelings arise out of each individual’s personal perceptions, fantasies and their imaginations. People who actually feel this attraction have a very complex problem, as it is not an accepted norm in society.

Publicizing:

In the year 1972, a graduate student in consultation with a doctor who shared his fetish, joined hands and started the first ever journal on the erotic appeal of amputees stumps and the feeling of amputating oneself in the process. A few years later in 1978, a woman amputee Bette Hagglund began writing about amputee erotica, romance novels and articles that were solely for the amputee community. These were actually published under the banner of ‘Fascination’, which appeared in a magazine especially for the amputees. It did a roaring business, and the funds were used to conduct the first ever ‘Fascination’ conference in the year 1985.

Early starts:

The Fascination theory was founded in the field of literature way back in the year 1555, starting with ‘Of Cripples’ an essay by Michel de Montaigne. This proved that it was indeed an ancient phenomenon. In the essay, the author used an example of the Queen of Amazon, who makes a statement that a lame man is the one who performs best. Thus, this fetish has been doing the rounds from those days, and maybe even prior to that, though there hasn’t been written documents to support this.

Devotees, Pretenders and Wannabes:

The number of amputees and their sexually aroused fellows has risen quickly since the late 1970’s. Such persons are classified into three different categories – the Devotees, the pretenders and the so-called wannabes. The devotees are those who have the sexual fantasies and romanticize about with the amputated man or woman. The term was coined initially in Chicago by a group of men who socialized with amputee women and were attracted by them.

The pretenders are those people who pretend to be amputees, in order to experience the sexual fetish for themselves. To make it realistic, these people often take to wheelchairs and bandages on their limbs etc. In some extreme cases, they may also go to the extent of cutting off their limbs to feel closer to their amputee partners. The wannabes are those persons who wish to become amputees, and sometimes also fulfill their wishes using surgical methods.
